Vietnam moves on Grab and Zalo, and both need data. Add Google Maps for navigating the motorbike chaos of Hanoi and Saigon, and a travel eSIM covers almost everything a visitor needs. It rides on the national networks, which are quick and cheap to roam.
What you can use the data for
Grab. The default for rides and food in the cities. A Grab bike is the fastest way through traffic, and the fare is fixed in the app, so there is nothing to negotiate.
Zalo. Vietnam's own messaging app, used far more than WhatsApp by locals, hotels, and tour operators. If a guesthouse asks you to message them, it is usually here.
Maps. Google Maps handles the cities, the coast road, and the routes between Hanoi, Hue, Da Nang, and Hoi An. It needs a live connection throughout.
Booking and tours. Halong Bay cruises, sleeper buses, and day tours are easiest to arrange and confirm over data while you are on the move.
Where it works
Coverage roams on Vietnam's national networks, strong along the well-traveled spine of the country:
- Hanoi (HAN) and the north
- Ho Chi Minh City (SGN) and the Mekong Delta gateway
- Da Nang (DAD) and Hoi An on the central coast
- Nha Trang (CXR) and Phu Quoc (PQC) island
- The coastal highway and rail line linking them
Coverage is reliable in the cities and along the coast. It thins out in the northern mountains around Sapa and Ha Giang and in remote Mekong Delta backwaters. Download offline maps before a motorbike loop in the highlands.
Common situations
Coastal tour from Hanoi to Saigon
Keep maps and booking apps live as you work down the country through Hue, Da Nang, Hoi An, and Nha Trang. A connection makes the buses, trains, and transfers much easier to coordinate.
City break in Saigon or Hanoi
Open Grab the moment you land and skip the airport taxi haggling. The eSIM runs beside your home SIM, so your usual number still rings.
Motorbike trip in the north
Buy a larger plan, download offline maps for Ha Giang and Sapa, and use the data in the towns to book rooms and check the route. Expect gaps on the high passes.
How to install your eSIM before you fly
- Buy the plan. The eSIM arrives by email, usually within a minute. Install it at home on Wi-Fi with the one-tap link or the QR code in the email. 6 plans start counting at install or purchase, and the tables mark them. Install those close to your flight.
- Name the line Vietnam and keep it off until you land. Do not delete it after setup, because an eSIM installs only once.
- On arrival, turn the line on, choose it for mobile data and turn on data roaming for it. Turn off data roaming on your home line.
Screen by screen steps for iPhone and Android are in our travel eSIM install guide.
