Quick facts

Malaysia runs on Grab for getting around and Google Maps for everything else, and a travel eSIM has both working from arrival. It covers peninsular Malaysia well, and it is a smart way to stay connected if your trip also crosses into Singapore or over to Borneo.

What you can use the data for

Grab. Rides and food across KL, Penang, and Johor Bahru, with the fare fixed in the app. From KLIA it is the easy way into the city.

Maps. Google Maps covers the cities, the coast, and the islands, including the causeway crossing to Singapore. It needs a connection throughout.

Messaging. WhatsApp is the default for hotels, dive operators, and tour desks across the country, so you will want it live.

Touch n Go. The local e-wallet covers tolls, transit, and many shops, and it runs on data.

Where it works

Coverage roams on Malaysia's national networks, strong across the peninsula and the main island and Borneo cities:

Coverage is strong across peninsular Malaysia and the main Borneo cities. It thins out in the interior rainforest of Sabah and Sarawak and on remote dive islands. Download offline maps before heading into the jungle or to the smaller islands.

Common situations

City and island trip on the peninsula

Activate at KLIA, open Grab, and move between KL, Penang, and Langkawi with maps and bookings running the whole time. A mid-size plan covers a week or two.

Crossing to or from Singapore

Keep maps and Grab live across the Johor Bahru causeway. Buy a separate Singapore plan for the island side and flip between the two labeled lines.

Diving or jungle trip in Borneo

Buy a larger plan, download offline maps for Sabah, and use the data in Kota Kinabalu and Kuching to arrange transfers. Expect gaps on remote dive islands and deep in the rainforest.

How to install your eSIM before you fly

  1. Buy the plan. The eSIM arrives by email, usually within a minute. Install it at home on Wi-Fi with the one-tap link or the QR code in the email. 8 plans start counting at install or purchase, and the tables mark them. Install those close to your flight.
  2. Name the line Malaysia and keep it off until you land. Do not delete it after setup, because an eSIM installs only once.
  3. On arrival, turn the line on, choose it for mobile data and turn on data roaming for it. Turn off data roaming on your home line.

Screen by screen steps for iPhone and Android are in our travel eSIM install guide.
