Indonesia, and Bali in particular, runs on Gojek and Grab for everything from rides to food to errands. A travel eSIM has them working from arrival, along with Google Maps for the islands. It saves the airport SIM queue, which in Bali can swallow an hour of your first day.
What you can use the data for
Gojek and Grab. The two super-apps cover rides, scooters, food, and deliveries across Bali and Java. A scooter ride through Bali traffic is the fastest way around, and the fare is fixed in the app.
Maps. Google Maps handles the islands, including the routes between Ubud, Canggu, and the beaches, and the ferry crossings to the Gili Islands. It needs a connection throughout.
Messaging. WhatsApp is how villas, drivers, and tour operators communicate across Indonesia, so you will want it live.
Booking on the go. Dive trips, day tours, and last-minute villas are easiest to arrange over data while you are already moving.
Where it works
Coverage roams on Indonesia's national networks, strong across Java, Bali, and the main destinations:
- Bali (Denpasar, DPS), Ubud, Canggu, and Seminyak
- Jakarta (Soekarno-Hatta, CGK)
- Yogyakarta (YIA) and the temples of Java
- Surabaya (SUB) and Bandung
- Lombok (LOP) and the Gili Islands
Coverage is strong across Bali, Java, and the bigger cities. It weakens on remote islands, in the highlands, and on some stretches between dive sites. Download offline maps before island-hopping to Komodo, Flores, or the smaller Gilis.
Common situations
Bali holiday or digital nomad stay
Activate at Denpasar, open Gojek, and skip the long SIM queue. A scooter ride to your villa is a tap away. A larger data plan suits a longer stay working from Canggu or Ubud.
Temples and culture on Java
Keep maps and booking apps live across Yogyakarta, Borobudur, and Prambanan. The eSIM runs beside your home SIM, so your usual number still rings.
Island hopping east of Bali
Buy a bigger plan and download offline maps for Lombok, the Gilis, and Flores. Coverage holds on the main islands and drops on the remote ones.
How to install your eSIM before you fly
- Buy the plan. The eSIM arrives by email, usually within a minute. Install it at home on Wi-Fi with the one-tap link or the QR code in the email. 8 plans start counting at install or purchase, and the tables mark them. Install those close to your flight.
- Name the line Indonesia and keep it off until you land. Do not delete it after setup, because an eSIM installs only once.
- On arrival, turn the line on, choose it for mobile data and turn on data roaming for it. Turn off data roaming on your home line.
Screen by screen steps for iPhone and Android are in our travel eSIM install guide.
Phones that work
Your phone must support eSIM and be unlocked. Check your model on our compatibility page.
