Australia is huge, with most people and coverage hugging the coast and the cities. A travel eSIM runs your ride apps, transit cards, and maps in those areas from arrival. Head into the Outback and coverage drops away for hundreds of kilometres, so the smart move there is to download maps and tell someone your route before you set off.
What you can use the data for
Ride-hailing. Uber, DiDi, and Ola operate across the Australian cities and run on data. From the airport they are an easy alternative to the taxi rank.
Transit. Maps and the transit apps read the Sydney trains and Opal card, the Melbourne trams and Myki, and the Brisbane network.
Maps. Google Maps covers the cities, the east coast, and the routes to the reef and the wine regions. It needs a connection throughout.
Bookings. Great Barrier Reef tours, Sydney Opera House tickets, and campsite stays are easiest to reserve over a live connection.
Where it works
Coverage roams on Australia's national networks, strong along the populated coast and in the cities:
- Sydney (SYD) and New South Wales
- Melbourne (MEL) and Victoria
- Brisbane (BNE) and the Gold Coast
- Cairns (CNS), the gateway to the Great Barrier Reef
- Perth (PER) and the west coast
Coverage is strong in the cities and along the east and southwest coasts where most travel happens. It drops away fast in the Outback, the Red Centre, and the long empty highways. Download offline maps and plan carefully before driving inland.
Common situations
Sydney and Melbourne cities
Activate at the airport, tap on an Opal or Myki card, and use maps and Uber to get around. A mid-size data plan covers a city-focused trip easily.
Great Barrier Reef from Cairns
Keep maps and reef-tour bookings live around Cairns and the Whitsundays. Coverage holds in the coastal towns.
Outback or Red Centre road trip
Use the data in the towns and download offline maps for the drive to Uluru and across the interior, where there is no signal for long stretches. Tell someone your route before you go.
How to install your eSIM before you fly
- Buy the plan. The eSIM arrives by email, usually within a minute. Install it at home on Wi-Fi with the one-tap link or the QR code in the email. 7 plans start counting at install or purchase, and the tables mark them. Install those close to your flight.
- Name the line Australia and keep it off until you land. Do not delete it after setup, because an eSIM installs only once.
- On arrival, turn the line on, choose it for mobile data and turn on data roaming for it. Turn off data roaming on your home line.
Screen by screen steps for iPhone and Android are in our travel eSIM install guide.
