Network and plan details

Quick facts

The medinas of Marrakech and Fez are mazes built to confuse, and the single most useful thing a connection buys you is a map that shows where you are when the alleys all look the same. Add the ride apps for the cities and a connection for booking desert tours, and a travel eSIM covers the practical side of a Morocco trip.

What you can use the data for

Maps in the medina. Google Maps will not always show the tiny souk lanes perfectly, but it keeps you oriented in the old cities where it is very easy to get lost. It needs a live connection.

Ride-hailing. Careem and inDrive operate in the Moroccan cities and run on data, which spares you negotiating with the petit taxi drivers.

Booking tours. Sahara excursions to Merzouga, Atlas day trips, and riad stays are arranged and confirmed over WhatsApp and data, which most operators use.

Translation. Camera translation handles French and Arabic menus and signs outside the tourist core.

Where it works

Coverage roams on Morocco's national networks, strong in the cities and along the main routes:

Coverage is strong in the cities and along the main roads. It thins out in the High Atlas mountains, the deep Sahara, and remote villages. Download offline maps before a desert tour or a drive over the Atlas passes.

Common situations

Marrakech medina

Activate at the airport, and keep maps live to find your way back to your riad through the souks, which defeat most first-time visitors. A small data plan covers a few days easily.

Sahara desert tour

Book your Merzouga excursion over data in the city, then download offline maps, since the desert and the Atlas crossing have long stretches with no signal.

Fez and Chefchaouen

Use the data across the old city and the blue town, and for the drive through the Rif. The eSIM runs beside your home SIM, so your usual number still rings.

How to install your eSIM before you fly

  1. Buy the plan. The eSIM arrives by email, usually within a minute. Install it at home on Wi-Fi with the one-tap link or the QR code in the email. 2 plans start counting at install or purchase, and the tables mark them. Install those close to your flight.
  2. Name the line Morocco and keep it off until you land. Do not delete it after setup, because an eSIM installs only once.
  3. On arrival, turn the line on, choose it for mobile data and turn on data roaming for it. Turn off data roaming on your home line.

Screen by screen steps for iPhone and Android are in our travel eSIM install guide.

Will maps work in the medina?

Google Maps keeps you oriented in the old cities, which is the main reason to have data here, even if the smallest souk lanes are not all mapped perfectly.

Will it work in the Sahara?

Cities and main roads are covered. The deep desert and the Atlas passes have long gaps, so book tours and download offline maps in town first.

Can I use a ride app instead of haggling?

Yes. Careem and inDrive run on the data in the cities, so you can book a cab with the fare set in the app.
