Spain is built for getting around once you are connected: Google Maps reads the metros, Cabify and Bolt cover the cabs, and the Renfe app manages the fast trains between cities. WhatsApp is how almost everyone communicates here. A travel eSIM has it all from arrival, and a Europe regional plan usually covers Spain alongside its neighbors.
What you can use the data for
Maps and metro. Google Maps reads the Barcelona and Madrid metros and the city buses, with the right line and exit. It needs a connection throughout.
Ride-hailing. Cabify, Bolt, and Uber operate in the major cities and run on data, which beats waiting for a street taxi.
Trains. The Renfe app handles AVE high-speed tickets between Madrid, Barcelona, Seville, and Valencia, all stored on your phone.
WhatsApp. Spain runs on WhatsApp for hosts, tour desks, and restaurants, so staying reachable means staying on data.
Where it works
Coverage roams on Spain's national networks, strong across the mainland and the islands:
- Barcelona (BCN) and Catalonia
- Madrid (MAD) and the center
- Seville (SVQ) and Andalusia
- Valencia (VLC) and the east coast
- Malaga (AGP), Palma de Mallorca (PMI), and the islands
Coverage is strong across the cities, the coast, and the islands. It thins out in the Pyrenees, rural Extremadura, and the quieter parts of the interior. Download offline maps before a drive through the mountains or a leg of the Camino.
Common situations
Barcelona or Madrid city break
Activate at the airport, open Google Maps, and take the metro or a Cabify into the center without a SIM stop. A small data plan covers a few days.
Andalusia road trip
Keep maps and booking apps live across Seville, Cordoba, Granada, and the white villages. Coverage holds on the main roads, with gaps in the sierras.
Balearic or Canary island stay
The same eSIM works on Mallorca, Ibiza, and the Canaries. Download offline maps for the quieter coves and mountain roads.
How to install your eSIM before you fly
- Buy the plan. The eSIM arrives by email, usually within a minute. Install it at home on Wi-Fi with the one-tap link or the QR code in the email. 8 plans start counting at install or purchase, and the tables mark them. Install those close to your flight.
- Name the line Spain and keep it off until you land. Do not delete it after setup, because an eSIM installs only once.
- On arrival, turn the line on, choose it for mobile data and turn on data roaming for it. Turn off data roaming on your home line.
Screen by screen steps for iPhone and Android are in our travel eSIM install guide.
