France is easy to navigate once you are online: the RATP and Citymapper apps read the Paris metro, SNCF Connect handles the trains, and Google Maps covers the rest. A travel eSIM has them working from arrival. France is in EU roaming, so a Europe regional plan usually covers it alongside neighboring countries if your trip crosses borders.
What you can use the data for
Paris transit. Citymapper and the RATP app read the metro, RER, and buses, with live times and the best exit. They are how you move through the city without getting lost underground.
Trains. SNCF Connect manages TGV and regional tickets, which live in the app and need a connection to buy and show at the gate.
Ride-hailing. Uber and Bolt operate in Paris and the larger cities and run on data.
Maps and translation. Google Maps covers the regions and the wine routes, and camera translation handles menus outside the tourist centers.
Where it works
Coverage roams on France's national networks, strong across the cities and main regions:
- Paris, served by Charles de Gaulle (CDG) and Orly (ORY)
- Nice (NCE) and the Riviera
- Lyon (LYS) and the Rhone valley
- Marseille (MRS) and Provence
- Bordeaux (BOD) and the TGV lines between them
City and TGV coverage is strong. It thins out in the Alps, the Pyrenees, and deep rural areas like the Massif Central. Download offline maps before driving through the mountains or the quieter wine regions.
Common situations
Paris city break
Activate on the airport wifi, open Citymapper, and take the RER or a taxi into the center without buying a SIM. A small data plan covers a few days of museums and walking.
Riviera and Provence trip
Keep maps and train apps live as you move between Nice, Cannes, Marseille, and the hill villages. Coverage holds along the coast and the main roads.
Multi-country Europe trip
If France is one stop on a wider European route, a Europe regional plan covers it and the neighboring EU countries on the same eSIM. Check the plan notes for the country list.
How to install your eSIM before you fly
- Buy the plan. The eSIM arrives by email, usually within a minute. Install it at home on Wi-Fi with the one-tap link or the QR code in the email. 8 plans start counting at install or purchase, and the tables mark them. Install those close to your flight.
- Name the line France and keep it off until you land. Do not delete it after setup, because an eSIM installs only once.
- On arrival, turn the line on, choose it for mobile data and turn on data roaming for it. Turn off data roaming on your home line.
Screen by screen steps for iPhone and Android are in our travel eSIM install guide.
