Switzerland is a country you experience by train, and the SBB app that runs the network is one of the best travel tools anywhere. It needs data for tickets, connections, and the scenic routes. One thing to know: Switzerland is not in the EU, so a Europe regional plan often excludes it. A dedicated Swiss plan, or a regional one that lists Switzerland, is the safe choice.
What you can use the data for
Trains. The SBB Mobile app is the backbone of Swiss travel, with tickets, precise connections, and the famous scenic routes like the Glacier Express and Bernina. It needs a live connection to buy and show tickets.
Maps and hiking. Google Maps and the SwitzerlandMobility app cover the cities and the Alpine trails, though you should download offline maps before heading above the tree line.
Ride-hailing. Uber operates in Zurich, Geneva, and Basel and runs on data, alongside the reliable trams.
Bookings. Cable cars, mountain railways, and restaurant tables in the resorts are easiest to reserve over a connection.
Where it works
Coverage roams on Switzerland's national networks, which reach remarkably far into the mountains:
- Zurich (ZRH) and the German-speaking center
- Geneva (GVA) and the French-speaking west
- Bern, the capital, and Lucerne
- Interlaken, Zermatt, and the Jungfrau region
- The scenic rail routes through the Alps
Switzerland has some of the best mountain coverage in the world, holding signal on the trains, in the valleys, and at many high stations. It still drops on remote trails and high passes, so download offline maps before a serious hike.
Common situations
Scenic rail journey
Activate at the airport, open SBB Mobile, and let it manage the tight connections that make Swiss trains run like clockwork. The signal holds on the famous routes, so you can watch the map climb through the Alps.
Skiing or hiking in the resorts
Keep maps and lift apps live in Zermatt, Verbier, or the Jungfrau. Download offline trail maps before going above the tree line, where signal drops.
Business in Zurich or Geneva
Stay on email and calls between meetings in the finance and diplomatic districts. The eSIM runs beside your home SIM, so your usual number still rings.
How to install your eSIM before you fly
- Buy the plan. The eSIM arrives by email, usually within a minute. Install it at home on Wi-Fi with the one-tap link or the QR code in the email. 8 plans start counting at install or purchase, and the tables mark them. Install those close to your flight.
- Name the line Switzerland and keep it off until you land. Do not delete it after setup, because an eSIM installs only once.
- On arrival, turn the line on, choose it for mobile data and turn on data roaming for it. Turn off data roaming on your home line.
Screen by screen steps for iPhone and Android are in our travel eSIM install guide.
