Portugal is small, friendly, and easy to get around once you are online: Bolt and Uber cover the cabs, Google Maps reads the steep old streets of Lisbon and Porto, and the CP app handles the trains. It is also a magnet for remote workers, so a larger data plan suits a longer stay. A Europe regional plan usually covers Portugal alongside its neighbors.
What you can use the data for
Ride-hailing. Bolt and Uber are cheap and everywhere in Lisbon and Porto, and they run on data. They beat climbing the hills on foot after a long day.
Maps. Google Maps reads the tangled, hilly old quarters where addresses hide, and the tram and metro routes. It needs a connection throughout.
Trains and trams. The CP app manages intercity train tickets, and maps cover the famous Lisbon trams and the Porto metro.
Remote work. If you are staying to work, the data keeps you online between cafe sessions, and you can size up to a bigger plan on our site.
Where it works
Coverage roams on Portugal's national networks, strong across the mainland and the islands:
- Lisbon (LIS) and the Sintra coast
- Porto (OPO) and the Douro valley
- Faro (FAO) and the Algarve
- Madeira (Funchal, FNC)
- The Azores and the intercity rail line
Coverage is strong across the cities, the Algarve, and Madeira. It thins out in the mountainous interior and the quieter Azores islands. Download offline maps before a drive through the Serra da Estrela or a hike on the islands.
Common situations
Lisbon and Porto city trip
Activate at the airport, open Bolt, and ride into the center without a SIM stop. A connection makes the steep, confusing streets far easier with maps in hand.
Algarve beach holiday
Keep maps and booking apps live as you move between Faro, Lagos, and the coves. Coverage holds along the coast and the main roads.
Remote work stay
Portugal is a popular base for remote workers. A larger data plan keeps you online between cafe sessions. If you run low, you can buy another plan on our site without a shop visit.
How to install your eSIM before you fly
- Buy the plan. The eSIM arrives by email, usually within a minute. Install it at home on Wi-Fi with the one-tap link or the QR code in the email. 8 plans start counting at install or purchase, and the tables mark them. Install those close to your flight.
- Name the line Portugal and keep it off until you land. Do not delete it after setup, because an eSIM installs only once.
- On arrival, turn the line on, choose it for mobile data and turn on data roaming for it. Turn off data roaming on your home line.
Screen by screen steps for iPhone and Android are in our travel eSIM install guide.
Phones that work
