Quick facts

In Egypt, having Uber on your phone changes the trip. Cairo's street taxis are notorious for haggling and detours, while Uber and Careem show a fixed fare with the route tracked. A travel eSIM has them working from arrival, along with maps for the pyramids, the Nile, and the Red Sea resorts. A roaming eSIM also tends to handle calling apps better than a local SIM.

What you can use the data for

Ride-hailing. Uber and Careem run on data and spare you the constant taxi haggling in Cairo, since the fare and route are set in the app.

Maps. Google Maps covers Cairo, Giza, Luxor, and the resort towns, plus the desert roads. It needs a connection throughout.

Calling apps. Internet calling can be restricted on local Egyptian SIMs, but a roaming eSIM routes data abroad, so WhatsApp calls often work better.

Bookings and translation. Pyramid and temple tickets, Nile cruises, and dive trips are easiest over data, with translation for Arabic signage.

Where it works

Coverage roams on Egypt's national networks, strong along the Nile corridor and the resort coasts:

Coverage is strong in Cairo, along the Nile between Luxor and Aswan, and in the Red Sea resorts. It thins out fast in the Western Desert, the Sinai interior, and remote areas. Download offline maps before any desert excursion.

Common situations

Cairo and the pyramids

Activate at the airport, book an Uber to Giza, and skip the taxi negotiation. A connection keeps maps and ticket bookings in hand across a hectic city.

Nile cruise from Luxor to Aswan

Keep maps and temple bookings live along the river. Coverage holds in the towns and on much of the Nile corridor, with gaps in the desert beyond.

Red Sea diving in Hurghada or Sharm

Use the data across the resort towns and the dive bookings. The eSIM runs beside your home SIM, so your usual number still rings.

How to install your eSIM before you fly

  1. Buy the plan. The eSIM arrives by email, usually within a minute. Install it at home on Wi-Fi with the one-tap link or the QR code in the email. 2 plans start counting at install or purchase, and the tables mark them. Install those close to your flight.
  2. Name the line Egypt and keep it off until you land. Do not delete it after setup, because an eSIM installs only once.
  3. On arrival, turn the line on, choose it for mobile data and turn on data roaming for it. Turn off data roaming on your home line.

No. These plans are data only, and your home number stays on your regular SIM.

Why is Uber useful in Egypt?

Cairo's street taxis are known for haggling and detours. Uber and Careem show a fixed fare with the route tracked, which is far less stressful. A travel eSIM has them working from arrival.

Will WhatsApp calls work?

Internet calling can be restricted on local Egyptian SIMs. A roaming travel eSIM routes data through a partner network abroad, so calling apps often work better. Results can vary.

Will it work on a Nile cruise?

Coverage holds in the towns and along much of the Nile corridor between Luxor and Aswan. The open desert beyond has gaps, so download offline maps first.
