Network and plan details

Quick facts

First, the important distinction. This is a travel data eSIM: it gets your phone online for maps, messaging, and apps, but it does not give you a US phone number. If you need a real US number for calls and texts, that is a separate product: our US phone line. Pick this plan when you just need data for a trip.

What you can use the data for

Ride-hailing. Uber and Lyft both run on data and are the easy way from the airport into the city. For account sign-up they may want a phone number, so set that up before you travel if needed.

Maps. Google Maps and Apple Maps cover the cities, the interstates, and transit in New York, Chicago, and San Francisco. They need a connection throughout.

Messaging. iMessage, WhatsApp, and your usual apps keep working over data, so you stay reachable with friends and hosts.

Bookings and parks. Theme park apps at Disney and Universal, timed-entry tickets, and restaurant reservations all need a live connection on the go.

Where it works

Coverage roams on the major US networks, strong across the cities travelers visit:

City and interstate coverage is strong. It thins out in the national parks of the West, the deserts, and remote rural stretches. Download offline maps before a road trip through Yellowstone, the Grand Canyon, or the open country between cities.

Common situations

Tourist doing New York, Vegas, or Orlando

Activate at the airport, open Maps and your ride app, and head into the city without a SIM stop. A mid-size data plan covers a one or two week trip with maps and messaging running all day.

Road trip through the West

Keep maps live in the cities and download offline maps for the national parks and the long desert highways, where signal drops for miles at a time.

When you need a US number, not just data

If you need a US number for calls and texts, this data eSIM will not do it. Choose our US phone line instead, which is a real US number on a carrier network.

Need a US phone number too?

These plans are data only. For a real US number with calls and texts, see our US phone line, the US unlimited plan by the day, or all US number plans.

How to install your eSIM before you fly

  1. Buy the plan. The eSIM arrives by email, usually within a minute. Install it at home on Wi-Fi with the one-tap link or the QR code in the email. 10 plans start counting at install or purchase, and the tables mark them. Install those close to your flight.
  2. Name the line United States and keep it off until you land. Do not delete it after setup, because an eSIM installs only once.
  3. On arrival, turn the line on, choose it for mobile data and turn on data roaming for it. Turn off data roaming on your home line.

Screen by screen steps for iPhone and Android are in our travel eSIM install guide.

Phones that work

Your phone must support eSIM and be unlocked. Check your model on our compatibility page.

Does the eSIM come with a phone number?

No. These plans are data only, and your home number stays on your regular SIM. If you need a US number, see our US phone line or the US number plans.

Which should I buy, the data eSIM or the US number?

If you just need internet for maps and messaging on a trip, this data eSIM is cheaper and simpler. If you need a US number for calls and texts, you need our US phone line instead.

Will it work in the national parks?

Cities and interstates are well covered. The national parks, deserts, and remote rural areas have long gaps, so download offline maps before a road trip.

Can I use Uber and Lyft with it?

Yes, the apps run on the data. Note that creating a new ride-share account may require a phone number, so set that up before you travel if you do not already have one.
