Network and plan details

Quick facts

In Mexico, having data on arrival is partly a safety thing. Booking an Uber instead of an unmarked street taxi, with the route and driver tracked in the app, is the advice every guidebook gives. A travel eSIM has Uber, maps, and WhatsApp working from the moment you land, which matters most in those first hours.

What you can use the data for

Ride-hailing. Uber and DiDi run on data and are widely recommended over hailing a street taxi, since the fare, route, and driver are tracked in the app. From the airport they are the safer choice.

Maps. Google Maps covers the cities, the Riviera Maya, and the routes to the cenotes and ruins. It needs a connection throughout.

WhatsApp. Mexico runs on WhatsApp for hotels, tour operators, drivers, and restaurants, so staying reachable means staying on data.

Bookings. Cenote tours, Chichen Itza trips, and dinner reservations are easiest to arrange and confirm over a connection.

Where it works

Coverage roams on Mexico's national networks, strong across the cities and the resort coasts:

Coverage is strong in the cities, the resort zones, and along the main highways. It thins out in the jungle interior of the Yucatan, the Baja desert, and remote mountain villages. Download offline maps before driving to the more remote cenotes or ruins.

Common situations

Cancun and the Riviera Maya

Activate at the airport, book an Uber or a vetted transfer, and skip the aggressive taxi touts. A connection keeps maps and tour bookings in hand as you move between Cancun, Playa, and Tulum.

Mexico City trip

Use Uber and maps to get around a huge city safely, and translation for the menus and markets. A mid-size data plan covers a week easily.

Cabo or Vallarta beach holiday

Keep maps and booking apps live across the resort zone and the day trips. The eSIM runs beside your home SIM, so your usual number still rings.

How to install your eSIM before you fly

  1. Buy the plan. The eSIM arrives by email, usually within a minute. Install it at home on Wi-Fi with the one-tap link or the QR code in the email. 2 plans start counting at install or purchase, and the tables mark them. Install those close to your flight.
  2. Name the line Mexico and keep it off until you land. Do not delete it after setup, because an eSIM installs only once.
  3. On arrival, turn the line on, choose it for mobile data and turn on data roaming for it. Turn off data roaming on your home line.

Screen by screen steps for iPhone and Android are in our travel eSIM install guide.

Booking an Uber or DiDi instead of an unmarked street taxi is widely recommended, since the app tracks the fare, route, and driver. Having data on arrival means you can do that from the airport.

Will it work along the Riviera Maya?

Yes. Cancun, Playa del Carmen, and Tulum are well covered. The jungle interior and remote cenotes have gaps, so download offline maps first.

Uber runs on the data once you switch on roaming. Check current airport pickup rules, since some Mexican airports restrict where ride-share can collect you.
