Romania has some of the fastest and cheapest mobile data in Europe, which is handy for a country where the best parts are the castles and mountain roads of Transylvania. A connection runs the ride apps and the maps that get you between Bucharest, Brasov, and the Carpathians. Romania is in EU roaming, so a Europe regional plan usually covers it.
What you can use the data for
Ride-hailing. Bolt and Uber are cheap and reliable in the Romanian cities, and they run on data. From the airport they are the simplest way into Bucharest or Cluj.
Maps. Google Maps covers the cities and the mountain roads up to Bran Castle, Peles, and the Transfagarasan. It needs a connection throughout.
Trains and buses. The CFR app and intercity bus apps handle tickets and times between the main cities.
Bookings. Castle tours, mountain guesthouses, and day trips are easiest to reserve over a live connection.
Where it works
Coverage roams on Romania's national networks, fast and good value across the cities and main routes:
- Bucharest (OTP) and the south
- Cluj-Napoca (CLJ) in Transylvania
- Brasov and the castle country
- Sibiu and the Saxon towns
- Timisoara and the west
City and main-road coverage is strong and quick. It thins out in the high Carpathians, the remote Maramures villages, and the Danube Delta. Download offline maps before driving the Transfagarasan or hiking in the mountains.
Common situations
Transylvania castle tour
Keep maps and booking apps live as you drive between Brasov, Bran Castle, and Peles. Coverage holds in the towns and on the main roads, with gaps high in the mountains.
Bucharest city and business
Activate at the airport, book a Bolt into the center, and stay on email and maps. The eSIM runs beside your home SIM, so your usual number still rings.
Mountain road trip
Use the data in the valleys and download offline maps for the Transfagarasan and the high passes, where signal drops.
How to install your eSIM before you fly
- Buy the plan. The eSIM arrives by email, usually within a minute. Install it at home on Wi-Fi with the one-tap link or the QR code in the email. 8 plans start counting at install or purchase, and the tables mark them. Install those close to your flight.
- Name the line Romania and keep it off until you land. Do not delete it after setup, because an eSIM installs only once.
- On arrival, turn the line on, choose it for mobile data and turn on data roaming for it. Turn off data roaming on your home line.
Screen by screen steps for iPhone and Android are in our travel eSIM install guide.
