Most trips to Hungary center on Budapest, with its thermal baths, ruin bars, and the Danube splitting Buda from Pest. A connection runs the transit app, the ride apps, and the maps that tie the two halves together. Hungary is in EU roaming, so a Europe regional plan usually covers it alongside Austria and the rest of the region.
What you can use the data for
City transit. The BudapestGO app reads the metro, trams, and buses, with mobile tickets that need a connection. The metro line under the Danube is the quick way between Buda and Pest.
Ride-hailing. Bolt operates across Budapest and runs on data, which is the simplest way home after a late night in the ruin bars.
Maps. Google Maps covers the city and the routes out to the Danube Bend and Lake Balaton. It needs a connection throughout.
Bookings. Thermal bath tickets, river cruises, and restaurant tables are easiest to reserve over a live connection.
Where it works
Coverage roams on Hungary's national networks, strong in Budapest and across the country:
- Budapest and Budapest Airport (BUD)
- Debrecen (DEB) in the east
- The Danube Bend towns of Szentendre and Visegrad
- Lake Balaton and the resort towns
- Pecs and the south
Coverage is strong in Budapest and the main towns and holds across most of this relatively flat country. It thins out only in the remote rural east and the border hills. Download offline maps before exploring the back roads.
Common situations
Budapest baths and ruin bars
Activate at the airport, take the metro or a Bolt into the center, and keep maps live across both sides of the river. A small data plan covers a long weekend easily.
Danube Bend day trip
Keep maps and train apps live for trips out to Szentendre, Visegrad, and Esztergom. Coverage holds on the main routes along the river.
Lake Balaton in summer
Use the data across the resort towns and the ferry crossings. The eSIM runs beside your home SIM, so your usual number still rings.
How to install your eSIM before you fly
- Buy the plan. The eSIM arrives by email, usually within a minute. Install it at home on Wi-Fi with the one-tap link or the QR code in the email. 8 plans start counting at install or purchase, and the tables mark them. Install those close to your flight.
- Name the line Hungary and keep it off until you land. Do not delete it after setup, because an eSIM installs only once.
- On arrival, turn the line on, choose it for mobile data and turn on data roaming for it. Turn off data roaming on your home line.
