Most trips to Peru run Lima first, then Cusco, the Sacred Valley, and Machu Picchu. A connection covers the ride apps and maps in the cities and keeps your trail and train bookings in hand. Up in the Andes, coverage gets patchy, so the smart move is to load everything over data in Cusco before you head out.
What you can use the data for
Ride-hailing. Uber, Cabify, Beat, and DiDi operate in Lima and Cusco and run on data, which is the safer way around than street taxis.
Maps. Google Maps covers Lima, Cusco, and the Sacred Valley towns, plus the routes to the ruins. It needs a connection throughout.
WhatsApp and bookings. WhatsApp is how agencies and lodges communicate, and a connection keeps your Inca Trail permits, train tickets, and tours organized.
Translation. Camera translation helps with menus and signs, and altitude and weather apps are worth checking before the high passes.
Where it works
Coverage roams on Peru's national networks, strong in the cities and the main tourist hubs:
- Lima (LIM) and the coast
- Cusco (CUZ), the gateway to the Andes
- The Sacred Valley towns of Ollantaytambo and Urubamba
- Aguas Calientes, the base for Machu Picchu
- Arequipa (AQP) and the south
Coverage is strong in Lima, Cusco, and the Sacred Valley towns. It thins out fast on the Inca Trail, in the high Andes, and in the Amazon around Iquitos. Download offline maps before any trek, since you will be offline for stretches.
Common situations
Cusco, the Sacred Valley, and Machu Picchu
Use the data in Cusco to confirm train times, permits, and tours, then download offline maps before the trail. Coverage holds in the towns and drops on the high routes.
Lima food and city trip
Activate at the airport, book a Cabify into Miraflores, and keep maps and restaurant bookings live across the city. A small data plan covers a few days.
Arequipa and the canyon
Keep maps and tour bookings live in the city, and download offline maps before the Colca Canyon, where signal disappears on the rim and the trails.
How to install your eSIM before you fly
- Buy the plan. The eSIM arrives by email, usually within a minute. Install it at home on Wi-Fi with the one-tap link or the QR code in the email. 2 plans start counting at install or purchase, and the tables mark them. Install those close to your flight.
- Name the line Peru and keep it off until you land. Do not delete it after setup, because an eSIM installs only once.
- On arrival, turn the line on, choose it for mobile data and turn on data roaming for it. Turn off data roaming on your home line.
Screen by screen steps for iPhone and Android are in our travel eSIM install guide.
