Brazil runs on WhatsApp more completely than almost anywhere. Hotels, tour guides, drivers, and restaurants all expect to reach you there, so a live connection is close to essential. Add Uber and the local 99 app for getting around, and a travel eSIM covers the practical side of a trip from arrival.
What you can use the data for
WhatsApp. In Brazil, WhatsApp is how everyone communicates, from your pousada to your tour to the restaurant booking. Staying reachable means staying on data.
Ride-hailing. Uber and the Brazilian 99 app both run on data and are the safer way around the cities, with the route and driver tracked in the app.
Maps. Google Maps covers Rio, Sao Paulo, the coast, and the routes to Iguazu and the beaches. It needs a connection throughout.
Bookings and translation. Sugarloaf and Christ the Redeemer tickets, samba shows, and Portuguese menus are all easier with a connection in hand.
Where it works
Coverage roams on Brazil's national networks, strong across the cities and the populated coast:
- Rio de Janeiro (Galeao, GIG, and Santos Dumont, SDU)
- Sao Paulo (Guarulhos, GRU, and Congonhas, CGH)
- Salvador (SSA) and the northeast
- Brasilia (BSB), the capital
- Foz do Iguacu (IGU) for the falls
Coverage is strong in the cities and along the coast. It thins out fast in the Amazon, the Pantanal wetlands, and the vast interior. Download offline maps before any trip into the rainforest or the backlands.
Common situations
Rio for Carnival or the beaches
Activate at the airport, book an Uber or 99 into the city, and keep WhatsApp live for your bookings. A connection makes the big-event logistics of Carnival far easier to manage.
Sao Paulo business trip
Stay on WhatsApp, email, and maps between meetings across a sprawling city. The eSIM runs beside your home SIM, so your usual number still rings.
Iguazu Falls and beyond
Keep maps and tour bookings live around Foz do Iguacu. For an Amazon add-on, download offline maps, since coverage drops deep in the rainforest.
How to install your eSIM before you fly
- Buy the plan. The eSIM arrives by email, usually within a minute. Install it at home on Wi-Fi with the one-tap link or the QR code in the email. 2 plans start counting at install or purchase, and the tables mark them. Install those close to your flight.
- Name the line Brazil and keep it off until you land. Do not delete it after setup, because an eSIM installs only once.
- On arrival, turn the line on, choose it for mobile data and turn on data roaming for it. Turn off data roaming on your home line.
Screen by screen steps for iPhone and Android are in our travel eSIM install guide.
