What it means

A switch retirement means Verizon is replacing the switching equipment that serves this office and moving its calls to another switch. These notices are mostly about how other phone companies connect to Verizon. It is not a copper retirement notice. Read the notice to see what changes.

What to do

If your line runs over Verizon copper in an office on a retirement notice, it will have to move to another service. What to do depends on what the line runs.

Verizon's New Jersey copper retirement notice names the alternatives itself: “VoIP service from Verizon or a cable company, or fixed or mobile wireless service from multiple providers including Verizon Wireless.”

The kinds of replacement to ask about:

  • Cellular landline-replacement devices that keep the existing panel or phone working.
  • Internet phone service (VoIP), from Verizon, a cable company or another provider.
  • Fixed or mobile wireless service.
Fire alarm panel

Fire alarm communicators are inspected, and whatever replaces the copper line has to be accepted by your fire alarm service company and your local fire official.

Ask your fire alarm service company now which replacement they support for your panel. Common choices are a cellular communicator or a dual-path communicator that uses cellular and the internet.

Keep the paperwork that shows the change for your next inspection.

Elevator emergency phone

Elevator emergency phones are inspected too. Ask your elevator service company now which replacement keeps the phone working and passes inspection.

A common choice is a cellular unit made for elevator phones that keeps the existing phone in the car.

Test a call from the elevator after the change.

Fax machine

A fax machine can keep working on a cellular landline-replacement device or on an internet phone line, but not every service handles fax well.

Send and receive a few test faxes on the new connection before the copper line is gone. An online fax service is another option.

Security or burglar alarm

Ask your alarm company whether your panel can report over a cellular communicator or the internet. Many panels can take a cellular module in place of the phone-line dialer.

Ask the alarm company to send a test signal to the monitoring center after the change.

Gate or door phone

Gate and door phones can often keep the existing unit on a cellular landline-replacement device, or be replaced with a cellular or internet intercom.

After the change, check that a call from the gate reaches the right phones and that the gate or door still opens.

Card terminal or ATM

Card terminals and ATMs that dial out over a phone line need a new connection. Most current machines can use the internet or cellular.

Ask your payment processor or ATM provider which connection your machine supports and how to switch it.

Home phone or medical alert

A home phone can move to a phone on a cellular landline-replacement device, to a cable or internet phone line, or to a mobile phone.

Medical alert devices that use a home phone line may need a cellular or internet version. Ask the device company before the copper is gone, and press the test button after the change.
