How Cash App SMS verification works
Cash App's signup and login flow asks for a phone number, then sends a 6-digit SMS code. The check is strict: the number must be a US (+1) mobile number, not a VoIP gateway, not a "known disposable" provider. Most cheap SMS-receive services fail because Cash App detects them as VoIP and refuses to send the code.

Recovery vs. fresh signup
For brand-new accounts, this works straight-up. For recovery of an existing account, Cash App may require additional ID verification (driver's license, etc.) โ that's a Cash App policy, not something a phone number alone can solve.
If your account was originally created with a number you no longer have access to, the SMS-receive route works to add a new number to the account, but only if your account is currently logged in or you can pass other security checks. If fully locked out, follow Cash App's "lost account" flow.
