Network and plan details

Quick facts

Taiwan has some of the cheapest, fastest data in Asia, and it is wired everywhere a traveler goes. A travel eSIM gets you on it from Taoyuan onward, running LINE for messaging, Google Maps for the cities and night markets, and your ride apps without a stop at an airport kiosk.

What you can use the data for

LINE. The messaging app everyone in Taiwan uses, including hostels, tour desks, and friends. Staying reachable means staying on data.

Maps. Google Maps works well across Taipei, Kaohsiung, and the smaller cities, including the bus and metro systems and the routes to the night markets.

EasyCard. Taiwan's transit card covers the MRT, buses, and convenience stores. Apps that manage and top it up run on data.

Ride-hailing. Uber and Taiwan Taxi both operate in the cities and run entirely on a connection.

Where it works

Coverage roams on Taiwan's national networks, fast and dense across the island:

Coverage is strong across the western cities and the high-speed rail, which links Taipei to Kaohsiung in under two hours. It thins in the central mountains and on the remote east coast around Taroko Gorge, so download offline maps for those.

Common situations

Tourist doing Taipei and the night markets

Activate at Taoyuan, open Google Maps, and navigate the metro to Shilin or Raohe without buying a SIM first. A mid-size plan covers a week of city exploring.

Business in Taipei or Hsinchu

Keep email and LINE live between meetings, including the tech corridor around Hsinchu. The eSIM runs beside your home SIM, so your usual number still rings.

Round-the-island trip

Use the high-speed rail down the west and the slower line up the east. Coverage holds on the trains, with gaps only in the mountains, where an offline map fills in.

How to install your eSIM before you fly

  1. Buy the plan. The eSIM arrives by email, usually within a minute. Install it at home on Wi-Fi with the one-tap link or the QR code in the email. Every plan for Taiwan starts on first use, so installing early costs you no days.
  2. Name the line Taiwan and keep it off until you land. Do not delete it after setup, because an eSIM installs only once.
  3. On arrival, turn the line on, choose it for mobile data and turn on data roaming for it. Turn off data roaming on your home line.
