Ireland is a road-trip country, and the coast roads of the Wild Atlantic Way are where a connection earns its keep, for maps, B&B bookings, and the next stop. Dublin is also a major tech base, so business travelers pass through constantly. Ireland is in EU roaming, so a Europe regional plan usually covers it, though Northern Ireland is part of the UK and may need a separate plan.
What you can use the data for
Maps. Google Maps covers the cities and the coast roads, which wind and split far more than any paper map can keep up with. It needs a connection throughout.
Trains and buses. The Irish Rail and bus apps handle intercity tickets and times, and a Leap card covers Dublin transit.
Ride-hailing and taxis. Free Now books licensed taxis in Dublin and the cities, which is simpler than flagging one down.
Bookings. B&Bs, castle tours, and the Cliffs of Moher slots are easiest to reserve over data while you are on the road.
Where it works
Coverage roams on Ireland's national networks, strong in the cities and reaching most of the populated coast:
- Dublin (DUB) and the east
- Cork (ORK) and the south
- Galway and the west
- Shannon (SNN) and the Wild Atlantic Way gateway
- Killarney and the Ring of Kerry
City and main-road coverage is solid. It thins out in the rural west, Connemara, the Ring of Kerry's quieter stretches, and the islands. Download offline maps before driving the Wild Atlantic Way, where signal comes and goes.
Common situations
Wild Atlantic Way road trip
Keep maps and B&B bookings live as you drive the coast from Cork through Kerry and Galway up to Donegal. Download offline maps for the remote headlands, where signal drops between villages.
Dublin city break
Activate at the airport, grab a Leap card, and use maps and Free Now to get around. A small data plan covers a few days of pubs and museums.
Business in Dublin
Stay on email and calls between meetings in the tech and finance districts. The eSIM runs beside your home SIM, so your usual number still rings.
How to install your eSIM before you fly
- Buy the plan. The eSIM arrives by email, usually within a minute. Install it at home on Wi-Fi with the one-tap link or the QR code in the email. 8 plans start counting at install or purchase, and the tables mark them. Install those close to your flight.
- Name the line Ireland and keep it off until you land. Do not delete it after setup, because an eSIM installs only once.
- On arrival, turn the line on, choose it for mobile data and turn on data roaming for it. Turn off data roaming on your home line.
Screen by screen steps for iPhone and Android are in our travel eSIM install guide.
